Statement from CEO and Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor and Steward of AirAsia Aviation Group, stated, “Subang Airport holds a special place in my heart, and it’s thrilling to see its resurgence as a key player in Malaysia’s aviation landscape. The government’s decision to revitalise the airport into a regional aviation hub aligns perfectly with our mission to revolutionise the industry. Our increased air traffic and passenger flow will boost related industries, driving economic growth and development in the region.
“AirAsia’s return to Subang Airport is not just nostalgic but also strategic. Capital A’s engineering arm, Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), operates there, enhancing the efficiency of our aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities. Repainting Subang Airport red symbolises not just a return to our roots but also a commitment to our growth journey and the prosperity of the communities we serve. This is a positive step for the nation’s aviation industry, and we are excited to lead this visionary move.”
Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia, stated, “Our decision to make Subang Airport our second home in Kuala Lumpur is driven by several compelling factors and opportunities. Its proximity to the city center and surrounding suburbs offers an optimal travel experience for nearby guests. Additionally, the airport’s smaller size and lower passenger volume ensure a seamless journey, aligning with our commitment to enhancing the overall guest experience, providing greater flexibility and choice, and fostering healthy competition in the nation’s aviation industry.
“Operating at Subang Airport will increase AirAsia Malaysia’s domestic network from 920 to 948 weekly flights, covering 40 routes. This expansion is expected to drive our next growth phase in Malaysia and the region. We anticipate adding more routes from Subang, including international ones, pending regulatory approval, reinforcing our vision of transforming Malaysia into a premier aviation hub.
